About

Tali Mahadeva Temple, also known locally as Tali Mahakshetram or Thali Maha Shiva Kshetram, is a revered ancient temple situated in the Palayam / Tali area of Kozhikode, Kerala.

Renowned as a royal temple built by the Zamorin (Samoothiri) rulers of Calicut, this living heritage temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre for devotees of Lord Shiva.

The temple’s architecture reflects the classic Kerala style, with intricate woodwork and traditional design elements that add to its spiritual ambiance. The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva, worshipped in his Mahadeva aspect.

The temple is also home to several other deities, including Goddess Parvati (Uma), Tali Ganapathy, Thevarathil Ganapathy, Thrumandhakunnu Bhagavathy, Sree Krishna, Thevarathil Bhagavathy, Lord Ayyappa, Sri Vishnu, Nagam, and Narasimhamoorthy.

This makes Tali Mahadeva Temple a unique destination for devotees seeking blessings from multiple divine forms. Darshan at the temple is free for all visitors. The temple is open daily from 4:30 AM to 11:00 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The best times to visit are during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), late mornings, or during the evening aarti. The winter months from November to February and the festival season are particularly recommended for pilgrims seeking a vibrant spiritual experience.

A variety of poojas and rituals are performed in Sanskrit and Malayalam. Early morning rituals begin with Nadathurakkal & Abishekam at 4:30 AM, followed by Dhara & Usha Pooja, Ganapathi Homam, and Ravilathe Worship. Sheeveli processions take place at 7:00 AM and 7:15 AM.

Special poojas such as Uma Maheswara Pooja, Maha Mrutyunjaya Homam, and mantrasharchanas like Santhana Gopala and Vidya Gopala are available, with some offerings starting from just ₹20.

The temple observes major festivals including the Annual Utsavam in April-May, Revathi Pattathanam in October-November, Prathishta Dina Mahotsavam in June-July, and Maha Shivaratri in February-March.

During festivals, community feeding (prasada oottu) is organized, and devotees can book special offerings like Paayasam or Appam. Reaching Tali Mahadeva Temple is convenient. Kozhikode Railway Station is just 1 km away, and the temple is accessible by auto-rickshaw or taxi from major transit points.

Calicut International Airport is 23 km away. Accommodation options abound within 0.2–1.4 km, including Hotel Sasthapuri, The Raviz Calicut, and others.

Visitors are required to follow a strict dress code: men must wear a traditional mundu and be bare-chested, while women should wear a saree or salwar kameez. Photography and mobile phone use are strictly prohibited inside the temple.
