Rajarajeshwara Temple Taliparamba

Revered for its Kerala-style architecture and deep spiritual significance, the temple is also known by local names such as Perumchelloor, Chelloor, Chellur, Perumthrikovilappan, Perum-chelloorappan, and Lakshmipuram.

The temple’s heritage traces back to the Chola period, having been built by the Mushika (Kolathiri) dynasty kings, and it continues to function as a living heritage temple under a local trust.

The main sanctum enshrines Lord Shiva, with other deities including Goddess Parvati, Dakshinamurthy, Sage Parashurama, Nandi, and Kshetrapalaka/Bhoothanathan. Daily rituals and poojas are conducted in both Sanskrit and Malayalam, with a variety of offerings available for devotees.

The temple opens early with Nada Thurakkal & Kanikku Thurakkal from 5:00 AM to 5:30 AM, followed by poojas such as Vazhippadu Samarppanam at 6:00 AM, Natravat Pooja at 7:00 AM, Panthiradi Pooja at 8:00 AM, and Ucha Pooja at 9:30 AM.

Evening rituals include Deeparadhana after 6:00 PM and Athazha Pooja from 7:00 PM to 7:15 PM. Special offerings like Neyyamrithu (Ghee Pot offering), Pushpanjali, Swayamvara Pushpanjali, and Neyvilakku (Lamp Lighting/Oil Offering) are available at nominal prices.

The temple is open for darshan from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, with free darshan entry for all devotees. A strict traditional dress code is observed: men must wear dhoti or mundu and remain bare-chested, while women are required to wear saree or salwar kameez.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main complex, and mobile phones must be switched off or deposited before entry.

Rajarajeshwara Temple is especially vibrant during Maha Shivaratri (Sivarathri Mahotsavam) in February–March, monthly Pradosham, and on Mondays when special rituals are performed.

The best time to visit is during winter (November–February), in the morning (8 AM–12 PM), during evening aarti, or festival seasons. Pilgrims can reach the temple by arriving at Kannur city via train or air, then taking NH 66 north to Taliparamba (about 24 km).

From the Taliparamba bus stand, the temple is a short 1.5–2 km drive or auto-rickshaw ride along Temple Road. The nearest railway stations are Kannur (24 km), Pazhayangadi (14.5 km), and Kannapuram (15 km). Kannur International Airport is 36 km away, with Mangaluru International Airport at 115 km.

Facilities include paid parking near the main gate and daily traditional Annadanam (midday meal/prasadam). Sacred ash, kumkum, and sandal paste are also distributed as prasadam.
