Parassinikkadavu Sree Muthappan Temple

This ancient temple, with its distinctive Kerala architectural style, stands as a living heritage temple and draws devotees and visitors from across the region. The temple is also referred to as Puralimala Muthappan's shrine and is well-known for its unique rituals and vibrant atmosphere.

The temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, making early mornings and evenings the best times for darshan, especially during aarti or the festival season. Entry for darshan is free for all visitors.

The temple’s poojas are conducted in Malayalam, and among the most significant rituals are the Thiruvappana & Vellattam (Theyyam ritual), performed from 5:45 AM to 8:00 AM and from 6:30 PM onwards.

Other important offerings include Ottum Vellattam / Karimkalasam, Choroonu (the first feeding ceremony), and Thulabharam & Vilakkum Mala. The Ottum Vellattam / Karimkalasam ritual can be performed for a nominal fee.

Notable celebrations include Puthari Thiruvappana in the first week of December, Muthappan Thiruvoppana Mahothsavam in early March, Putharivellattam during the Malayalam month of Thulam, and Andupooja in Karkidakam.

These festivals attract large gatherings and are marked by elaborate rituals and cultural performances. The temple maintains a traditional dress code: men are encouraged to wear mundu (dhoti) with the upper chest bare or covered by a simple shirt, while shorts and western attire are discouraged.

Women are expected to wear saree, salwar kameez, or other modest ethnic wear. Photography and videography are strictly prohibited within the temple complex and during Theyyam performances, and mobile phones must be switched off or left outside.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with direct buses available from Kannur Main Bus Stand or Kannur Railway Station to Parassinikadavu.

If direct buses are unavailable, visitors can travel towards Taliparamba and alight at Dharmasala junction, then complete the remaining 4 km by auto-rickshaw, feeder bus, or taxi. The nearest railway stations are Kannapuram (14 km), Kannur (16 km), Payyannur (29 km), and Thalassery (44.3 km).

Kannur International Airport is 31 km away, with Mangalore and Calicut airports also accessible.
