About

Polo Forest Shiva Temples, also known locally as Sharneshwar Mahadev Temple, Sharaneshwar Temple, Shiva-Shakti Temple, and Polo Forest Shiva Temple, are revered pilgrimage destinations nestled in the scenic Abhapur village and Bandhana area of Polo Forest, near Vijaynagar in Sabarkantha district, Gujarat.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, these ancient temples also house sanctums for Surya and Suryani, making them significant for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace amidst the tranquil riverbank setting.

The temple complex is recognized as a state heritage site and is listed as an ASI monument, reflecting its historical and architectural importance.

Although the exact historical period is unknown or disputed, it is noted that the temples were originally built by the Parihar rulers of Idar and later expanded by the Rathore Rajputs of Marwar.

The architecture style is unique and distinct from mainstream temple designs, adding to the allure for history and culture enthusiasts. Pilgrims can visit the Polo Forest Shiva Temples daily between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

The best times for darshan include early mornings (5–8 AM), mornings (8 AM–12 PM), and during the evening aarti.

The temple is especially vibrant during the winter months (November to February), monsoon season (June to September), and during festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Shravan Maas (July-August), and Polo Utsav (November-February).

Weekdays tend to be less crowded, offering a peaceful atmosphere for worship. Devotees can participate in general darshan and personal puja, including abhishek and offerings of water or bilva leaves. Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit, Hindi, and Gujarati.

Entry for darshan is free, and a simple prasadam—such as sakar, charnamrit, and fruits—is distributed. While there is no regular annadanam, basic vegetarian food and snacks are available during festivals or weekends from the local community or vendors.

Visitors are advised to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional or modest casual attire (full-length trousers, dhotis, kurtas), and women are expected to dress conservatively in sarees, salwar kameez, or kurtis with dupatta.

Photography is permitted in the outer courtyards and ruins, but restrictions apply inside the sanctum, and professional shoots require prior permission.

Reaching the temple is convenient via road from Ahmedabad, Himmatnagar, and Idar, with clear directions leading to Abhapur village and Polo Forest Road. The nearest railway stations are Idar (35 km), Himmatnagar Junction (70 km), and Ahmedabad Junction (150 km).

For air travel, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad (150 km) and Maharana Pratap Airport in Udaipur (125 km) are the closest options. Ample parking is available near the forest entry, though the terrain may not be fully accessible for wheelchairs.

For accommodation, pilgrims can choose from Polo Tent City & Resort, Polo Retreat Resort, and The Fern Sattva Resort, all offering comfortable stays and local meals near Abhapur and Vijaynagar.

Nearby attractions include the Ancient Jain Temples of Polo (2 km), Harnav River & Dam (5 km), Vanaj Dam (6 km), and Idariyo Gadh (Idar Fort, 40 km), making the Polo Forest Shiva Temples a holistic spiritual and nature retreat.
