About

Pavagadh Mahakali Temple, also known as Kalika Mata Temple or Mahakali Mataji Temple, stands majestically atop the summit of Pavagadh Hill within the renowned Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park in Halol, Panchmahal district, Gujarat.

Revered as a Shakti Peeth and a significant pilgrimage centre, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman) and draws devotees from across India seeking darshan and spiritual solace.

The temple is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), adding to its historical and cultural significance.

Its unique location on a hill makes it a prominent hill temple, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and nearby attractions such as the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, Jami Masjid, Pavagadh Fort, Helical Stepped Well, Jain Temples of Pavagadh, and Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary.

Devotees can visit the temple daily between 6:00 AM and 7:30 PM. For a more peaceful experience, early morning hours (5–8 AM), the winter months from November to February, and festival seasons are considered the best times to visit.

The temple celebrates major festivals like Sharad Navratri (Aso Navratri) in September-October, Chaitra Navratri & Chaitra Purnima Fair in March-April, and Dussehra (Vijayadashami) in October, when the temple sees a large influx of pilgrims.

Poojas at the temple include the Morning Aarti at 5:00 AM and the Evening Aarti at 6:30 PM, conducted in Gujarati, Sanskrit, and Hindi. For darshan, devotees can choose between free darshan, special darshan (₹150), and VIP darshan (₹210), catering to different preferences.

To reach the temple, visitors arrive at Halol town or Champaner, then proceed to Maachi Haveli, the base plateau with parking and markets.

From here, one can either take the ropeway (Udan Khatola) for a quick six-minute ascent near the hilltop or climb approximately 2,000 steps from the base (or 250–300 steps from the ropeway drop-off) to reach the shrine. Multilevel parking and wheelchair-accessible paths are available at Maachi.

Private vehicles are restricted past the foothills on crowded days. Nearby railway stations include Champaner Road Junction (15 km) and Vadodara Junction (48 km), while the closest airports are Vadodara Airport (49 km) and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad (115 km).

Accommodation options range from Mahakali Dham Pawagadh and Champaner Nivas to heritage resorts and dharamshalas near the hill. Prasadam such as sukhdi, laddus, and dry sweets is distributed to devotees.

While annadanam is not a daily feature at the hilltop, food is available at dharamshalas and facilities at Maachi Haveli. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum but permitted in the outer premises, respecting security notices.

Visitors are expected to follow the dress code, with traditional attire encouraged for both men and women. For more information, the official website and contact phone are available for pilgrims planning their visit.
