About

Panniyur Sri Varahamurthy Temple, also known locally as Panniyur Mahakshetram or Panniyur Sreevaraham, is a revered ancient temple situated on the riverbank in Anakkara, near Kumbidi in the Palakkad district of Kerala.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Vishnu, this temple is a significant pilgrimage centre and stands as a living heritage site managed by the Panniyur Devaswom under the Zamorin of Calicut.

The temple’s architecture reflects the classic Kerala style, with intricate stone structures and a serene ambience that draws devotees and visitors alike.

The temple is home to several deities besides Lord Vishnu, including Lord Shiva, Lord Ayyappa, Durga Bhagavathy, Lord Ganesha, Lord Subramanya, Lakshmi Narayan, Chitragupta, and Yakshi, making it a spiritual hub for devotees seeking blessings from multiple divine forms.

The temple’s daily rituals and poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam, maintaining the traditional sanctity and vibrancy of Kerala temple culture. Darshan at Panniyur Sri Varahamurthy Temple is free for all devotees.

The temple is open from 5:30 AM to 10:30 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with early mornings and evening aarti times being the best periods to visit. The winter months from November to February are particularly pleasant for pilgrims.

For those wishing to participate in special poojas, a wide variety is available, ranging from Pushpanjali and Neyyuvilakku to elaborate offerings like Gaja Pooja and Thrikala Pooja, with prices starting as low as INR 10.

Devotees are expected to adhere to a traditional dress code: men are encouraged to wear Kerala mundu (dhoti), while women should opt for sarees or modest salwar kameez/churidars with dupatta. Western and revealing attire is discouraged, especially near the inner sanctum.

The temple celebrates major festivals such as Sree Varaha Jayanti in March–April and Prathishta Dinam in January–February, with special Annadanam (community feasts) and traditional prasadam like Payasam and Thrimadhuram distributed to devotees.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with clear directions from Palakkad, Thrissur, and Guruvayur. The nearest railway station is Kuttippuram (7 km), while Calicut International Airport is about 70 km away.

Accommodation options include Varahi Inn (opposite the temple), hotels in Changaramkulam, Edappal, and basic lodges in nearby towns. For those interested in exploring further, attractions like Guruvayur Sree Krishnaswamy Temple and Palakkad Fort are within easy reach.
