About

Panchalingeswar Temple, also known locally as Panchalingeshwar or the Panchalingeswar hill temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre nestled on the scenic slopes of the Panchalingeswar hills near Nilagiri in Balasore district, Odisha.

This ancient hill temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Goddess Parvati and local hillock deities also worshipped here. The temple is renowned for its unique hydro-worship practices, drawing devotees and nature lovers alike to its tranquil setting amidst lush greenery and rocky outcrops.

The temple is situated approximately 9–10 km from Nilagiri, accessible via Panchalingeshwar Road, and is surrounded by the Dwarika and Nilagiri hills. Pilgrims can reach the base of the hill by road, with dedicated paid parking available nearby.

From the foothill parking area, visitors must undertake a climb of about 300 stone steps to reach the sanctum, making it an invigorating spiritual journey. While the approach is not fully wheelchair-friendly and involves a 500-meter walk plus the steps, assistance is recommended for the elderly.

Panchalingeswar Temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with the best time to visit being during the winter months (November to February) or in the early mornings for a serene darshan experience.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are encouraged to wear dhotis, kurtas, or modest casuals, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or other modest ethnic attire. Devotees can participate in general daily puja and abhishekam rituals, conducted in Odia, Hindi, and Bengali.

Entry for darshan is free, and simple prasadam such as fruits, sweets, and puffed rice is distributed to visitors. Large-scale annadanam is organized during major festivals like Maha Shivaratri (February–March) and Magha Saptami Mela (January–February), which attract large gatherings of devotees.

For those planning a visit, Balasore Railway Station is the nearest major railhead, located 30 km away, while Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar is about 186 km from the temple.

Accommodation options near the foothills include Panthasala (KR Resorts) and Sai Iswari Hill View Resort, with additional hotels like Heritage Inn and NOCCi Residency available in Balasore town.

Photography is strictly prohibited near the main shrine and stream bed, but is allowed in the outer premises and hill areas, subject to local guidelines.

Nearby attractions include Nilagiri Jagannath Temple, Kuldiha Wildlife Sanctuary, Chandipur Beach, and Khirachora Gopinath Temple in Remuna, making Panchalingeswar an ideal destination for both spiritual seekers and tourists exploring Odisha’s natural and cultural heritage.
