About

Bhusandeswar Shiva Temple, also known locally as Baba Bhusandeswar Temple or Bhusandeswara Shiv Mandir, is a revered pilgrimage centre situated on the banks of the Subarnarekha River in Kumbhirgadi, Bhograi, within the Balasore district of Odisha.

This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and attracts devotees throughout the year, especially during auspicious occasions and festivals. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, providing ample opportunity for devotees to seek darshan of Lord Shiva.

The best time to visit Bhusandeswar Shiva Temple is during the early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM, in the winter months from November to February, or during the vibrant festival season.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are encouraged to wear dhoti, kurta, or modest casual wear, while women are advised to dress in saree, salwar kameez, or other traditional Indian attire. Short pants and sleeveless clothes are discouraged inside the inner sanctum.

Devotees can participate in various poojas performed in Sanskrit, including Mangala Aarti, Madhyanha Aarti, Sandhya Aarti, and Jalabhishek. Free darshan is available to all visitors.

On major festival days, such as Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Kartika Purnima (October–November), Shravana Mondays (Bol Bam, July–August), and Makara Sankranti (January), the temple becomes a hub of devotional activities.

During these times, free community mass feeding (annadanam) is organized, and prasadam such as sweets, fruits, and sugar is distributed to devotees. Reaching Bhusandeswar Shiva Temple is convenient for pilgrims.

From Balasore (about 34–35 km away), visitors can hire a taxi or take a local bus towards Bhogarai, Jaleswar, or Chandaneswar. From Jaleswar or Basta, local auto-rickshaws or rented cars are available to Kumbhirgadi village.

Those traveling from Digha in West Bengal can drive across the border into Odisha, reaching Bhograi in approximately 1.5 hours. The nearest railway stations are Jaleswar (25 km), Basta (30 km), and Balasore (35 km).

For air travelers, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata is 200 km away, while Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar is about 286 km from the temple. Basic open-air parking is available near the temple, with wheelchair-accessible entrance and approach paths.

Photography is permitted in the outer courtyard and premises but strictly prohibited inside the sanctum sanctorum. Accommodation options include basic guesthouses and pilgrim rest houses near Bhogarai and Chandaneswar, hotels and resorts in Digha or Talasari, and mid-range hotels in Balasore town.

Nearby attractions include Chandaneswar Temple (15 km), Talasari Beach (22 km), Bichitrapur Mangrove Reserve (25 km), Digha Sea Beach (35 km), and Chandipur Beach (50 km). For more information, visit the official website or contact the temple directly.
