Nakuleshwar Bhairav Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is recognized as a Shakti Peetha and stands as a significant spiritual destination for devotees and pilgrims in the city.

Built during the British colonial era by Tara Singh, a Punjabi merchant, in 1854 CE, the Nakuleshwar Bhairav Temple is a living heritage temple managed by a panchayat or local trust.

The temple’s architecture is unique and does not conform to any single traditional style, reflecting the diverse influences present in Kolkata during the 19th century.

The temple is open for darshan with free entry, and devotees can visit between 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

The best time to visit is early morning between 5–8 AM, during evening aarti, in the winter months from November to February, on weekdays for a less crowded experience, or during the vibrant festival season.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are expected to wear modest clothing such as trousers, jeans, shirts, or kurtas, while women are encouraged to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or kurtis, with revealing or tight-fitting outfits discouraged.

Daily Nitya Puja is performed in Bengali and Sanskrit, with special worship, aarti, and bhog offered on Mondays, Ekadashi, and Amavasya.

The temple comes alive during major festivals such as Maha Shivratri (February–March), Kalabhairav Ashtami (November–December), Amavasya (every New Moon), Purnima (every Full Moon), and Durga Puja/Navratri (September–October, March–April).

Prasad, including sweets, mishri, and fruits, is distributed on Mondays, Purnima, Amavasya, and Ekadashi, with occasional food distribution during festivals. Reaching Nakuleshwar Bhairav Temple is convenient via Kolkata Metro’s Blue Line, with Jatin Das Park and Kalighat Metro Stations nearby.

The temple is a short walk from Jatin Das Park station. Buses and trams stop at Kalighat on Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Road, and taxis or autos can take visitors to Kalighat Fire Station or Gurupada Halder Road. The temple is located in a narrow lane near the famous Kalighat Kali Temple.

The nearest railway stations are Padmapukur (0.75 km), Sealdah (11 km), and Howrah Junction (13 km), while Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is about 19 km away.

Please note that there is no dedicated parking, limited street parking is available, and the temple is not wheelchair accessible due to steps and narrow lanes.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum, and while courtyard photos may be tolerated, they are discouraged in worship zones.
