About

The Modhera Sun Temple, also known locally as the Surya Mandir of Modhera or Dharmaranya, is an ancient temple and ASI-protected monument situated on the left bank of the Pushpavati River in Modhera, Mehsana district, Gujarat.

This remarkable pilgrimage centre is renowned for its association with Surya, the Sun God, and also features shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.

The temple’s heritage status is further elevated by its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site, making it a significant destination for devotees and history enthusiasts alike. Visitors can experience the temple’s serene atmosphere daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the mornings between 8 AM and 12 PM or during the evening aarti.

The temple observes a modest dress code: men are advised to wear full-length trousers, jeans, or traditional kurtas/pyjamas, while women should opt for salwar kameez, sarees, long skirts, or conservative jeans and tops that cover shoulders and knees.

Darshan at the Modhera Sun Temple is accessible to all, with a nominal entry fee of INR 25.

The temple comes alive during festivals such as the Uttarardha Mahotsav (Modhera Dance Festival) held in the third week of January, Equinox Days in March and September, and Ratha Saptami/Makar Sankranti in January, drawing pilgrims and cultural enthusiasts from across the country.

Reaching the temple is convenient from Ahmedabad by following the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway, merging onto the Ahmedabad-Mehsana Highway (NH 158), and continuing toward Patan/Becharaji. After arriving at Modhera Bus Stand, the temple is just 800 meters away, accessible on foot or by auto-rickshaw.

The nearest railway stations are Becharaji (16 km), Mehsana Junction (28 km), and Ahmedabad Junction (100 km). For air travelers, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad is about 98 km away.

Accommodation options near the temple include Modhera Sunrise Resort, The Sun Glorious Restaurant & Rooms, Dolphin Hotel in Becharaji (about 15 km away), and Hotel Raison Inn on Becharaji-Harij Road.

For those interested in exploring further, nearby attractions include the Modhera Stepwell (0.4 km), Shree Modheshwari Mata Temple (0.5 km), Rani ki Vav in Patan (36 km), Bahuchara Mata Temple in Becharaji (16 km), and Vadnagar (64 km).

The temple complex offers dedicated paid parking, select EV charging zones, and wheelchair accessibility in the outer complex, gardens, and restrooms, though caution is advised on ancient stone floors and steps.

Photography for personal use is permitted, while tripods and commercial shoots require prior ASI permission. For more information, visitors can refer to the official website of Gujarat Tourism.
