Madhavrai Temple Madhavpur

This living heritage temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre on the Gujarat coast, attracting devotees of Lord Krishna, Lord Balaram, and Goddess Rukmini. The temple’s architecture presents a unique blend of mixed and renovated styles, reflecting its long history.

Originally constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries, the present structure was reconstructed in 1840 CE by Rupaniba, the Rajmata of Porbandar State, during the British colonial era.

Set just off Madhavrai Temple Road and National Highway 51, the temple is easily accessible for pilgrims traveling from Porbandar or Somnath/Veraval. Porbandar Railway Station is 58 km away, Keshod Railway Station is 39 km away, and Veraval Junction is 74 km away.

For air travelers, Porbandar Airport lies 58 km from the temple, while Keshod Airport is 45 km away and Rajkot International Airport is 175 km away.

Directions to the temple are straightforward: from Porbandar, drive southeast 58 km on NH 51, or from Somnath, drive northwest 74 km to reach Madhavpur town, where the temple is situated near the town center and close to the beach.

The temple is open for darshan from 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM, with a midday closure. Free darshan is available to all devotees.

Visitors are encouraged to wear traditional or modest attire—men should avoid shorts or sleeveless vests inside the inner sanctum, and women are advised to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or conservative kurtis.

Daily poojas include Mangala Aarti, Shringar, Rajbhog, and Sandhya Aarti, conducted in Gujarati and Sanskrit. The best times to visit are early morning, during evening aarti, in winter (November to February), or during festival season.

The temple is especially vibrant during the Madhavpur Mela (Divine Wedding Festival) in March-April, beginning on Ram Navami, and during Janmashtami in August–September.

Pilgrims can enjoy traditional sweet prasadam such as sankhiya, ladoos, and fruit panchamrit after aartis, with large-scale annadanam during the five-day Madhavpur Fair.

Parking is available with open street-side spaces and a wheelchair-accessible lot, though ramps inside the historical sanctum are limited. Photography is strictly prohibited near the main idols, but casual photography of the outer architecture may be allowed with permission from temple authorities.
