About

Kota Gullu, also known as the Ghanpur Group of Temples, is a remarkable ancient temple complex located in Ghanpur, Jangaon district, Telangana. This site is dedicated to Lord Shiva and stands as a significant example of heritage architecture from the Chola period.

The temples are also locally referred to as Ganapeshwaralayam, Kota Gudi, and Kota Gullu, reflecting their deep-rooted cultural presence in the region.

Built by King Ganapatideva of the Kakatiya Dynasty and overseen by Ganapathi Reddy, Kota Gullu is recognized as both a state heritage monument and an ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) protected site.

The complex is celebrated for its unique architectural style, which sets it apart from other temples in Telangana. The temple grounds feature intricately carved structures and a serene ambiance, making it a popular destination for devotees and history enthusiasts alike.

Darshan at Kota Gullu is accessible to all, with free entry for visitors. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, allowing ample time for pilgrims and tourists to explore and offer prayers.

Poojas are conducted in Telugu and Sanskrit, maintaining the traditional rituals associated with Lord Shiva worship. While there is no regular prasadam or annadanam facility available, visitors are encouraged to carry their own provisions when planning a trip to the temple.

The best time to visit Kota Gullu is during the winter months from November to February, with early mornings (5–8 AM) and late mornings (8 AM–12 PM) offering the most pleasant weather and tranquil atmosphere.

The temple becomes especially vibrant during festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March) and Kartika Pournami (November-December), when devotees gather to celebrate and participate in special rituals.

Visitors are advised to follow the dress code: men should wear traditional or modest casual clothing, while women are expected to dress conservatively, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Basic roadside or designated open-space parking is available near the temple’s outer perimeter, though the inner grounds may be uneven and challenging for those with mobility impairments.

Photography for personal use is permitted, but professional shoots, drone usage, or heavy tripods require prior permission from local authorities. Visitors are also reminded not to climb on delicate or fallen artifacts to help preserve the temple’s historical integrity.

For those interested in exploring more, the renowned Ramappa Temple is located just 9 kilometers away, making Kota Gullu an essential stop on any heritage trail in Telangana.
