Kosaleswara Temple Baidyanath

Situated on the northern bank of the Tel River in Baidyanath village, Subarnapur district, Odisha, this temple is a revered pilgrimage centre for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace.

The temple’s origins are attributed to early regional dynasties of the Koshala or Odisha region, possibly under Nala or Somavamshi patronage, though the exact builder and historical period remain unknown or disputed.

Recognized as a state heritage site, the temple’s unique architecture and serene riverside setting draw pilgrims and visitors throughout the year. The main sanctum enshrines Lord Shiva, while the temple complex also features shrines for Mahasena (Skanda), Ganas or dwarfs, and the Navagraha.

Daily worship and rituals are conducted in Sanskrit, with key poojas including the Morning Prakata/Puja around 6:00 AM, midday offerings, and the Sandhya Arati in the evening.

Devotees can participate in free darshan, with the temple open approximately from 5:00/6:00 AM until 8:00/9:00 PM, though it may close briefly in the afternoon. The best times to visit are during winter (November to February), early mornings, or during the evening aarti.

The temple becomes especially vibrant during major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Shravana Somvara (July–August), and Kartik Purnima (November), when special rituals and community-sponsored bhandara (free food) are organized.

Visitors are requested to observe a traditional dress code: men should wear modest attire, preferably dhoti or full-length trousers, and may be required to remove upper garments for certain rituals.

Women are encouraged to wear sarees or salwar kameez/churidar with dupatta, while western outfits and revealing clothes are discouraged. Reaching Kosaleswara Temple Baidyanath is convenient via Sonepur (Subarnapur Town), which is accessible by state highways or bus from major Odisha cities.

From Sonepur, travel 14 km along the Sonepur-Balangir route to Hardakhol Chowk, then take a local road southwest for 4–5 km to Baidyanath village.
