About

Kathgarh Shiva Temple, also known locally as Kathgarh Mahadev Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre nestled in the scenic village of Kathgarh, near Indora in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh.

Set against the tranquil backdrop of hills and the riverbank, this ancient temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Goddess Parvati and Nandi also enshrined within its sanctum.

The temple stands as a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking blessings and a peaceful darshan experience. The temple’s architecture reflects the Nagara (North Indian) style, lending it a distinctive and graceful appearance.

While the current structure was built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Sikh Empire, the site’s origins are acknowledged to trace back to antiquity, giving it a unique blend of historical and spiritual significance.

Managed by a local panchayat or trust, the temple continues to serve as a vibrant centre for religious activities and community gatherings.

Kathgarh Shiva Temple is open daily, with timings generally from 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM or 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, allowing ample time for devotees to participate in rituals and seek darshan. Entry for darshan is free, making it accessible to all pilgrims.

The temple’s spiritual routine includes special poojas such as Rudrabhishek, as well as daily Morning Aarti at 5:30 AM and Evening Aarti at 7:00 PM, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in devotional chants and rituals.

The best time to visit the temple is during the winter months from November to February, or in the early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM for a serene experience.

The temple comes alive during major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Sawan Mondays (monsoon months of July-August), Ram Navami (March-April), and Janmashtami (August-September), drawing devotees from across the region.

Reaching Kathgarh Shiva Temple is convenient, with detailed directions available: from Pathankot, head southeast toward Mirthal via NH44, then turn onto Mirthal–Kathgarh Road and drive 3–4 km to reach the village and temple.

The nearest railway stations are Mirthal (3 km), Pathankot Junction (23 km), and Pathankot Cantonment (26 km). For air travelers, Gaggal Airport (Kangra Airport) is 95 km away, while Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar is 110 km from the temple.

Accommodation options include basic temple-run rest houses and modest lodgings in Indora and nearby towns, with more comfortable hotels available in Pathankot, just 25 km away.

Pilgrims can also explore nearby attractions such as Mukteshwar Mahadev Mandir, Ranjit Sagar Dam & Lake, Shahpurkandi Fort, and Kangra Fort, making Kathgarh Shiva Temple an ideal destination for spiritual seekers and travelers alike.
