Chamundeshwari Temple

Dedicated to Goddess Shakti, also revered as Chamundi, Durga, and Krouncha Peetham, the temple is a significant site for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace. Lord Shiva is also worshipped here, adding to the temple’s religious significance.

The temple’s Dravidian architecture, with origins dating back to the Chola period, showcases the craftsmanship of the Hoysala rulers in the 12th century, with subsequent additions by the Vijayanagara Empire and Mysore Wodeyars.

Recognized as a state heritage monument, Chamundeshwari Temple stands as an ancient hill temple drawing pilgrims and tourists alike. The temple is open for darshan from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM, 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM, and 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

Early morning visits (5–8 AM), the winter months from November to February, and festival seasons offer the best experience for devotees. There are multiple darshan options: free darshan, special darshan (₹30), and Seeghra darshan (₹100), catering to different preferences.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are required to wear dhotis or formal pants and shirts, while women should wear sarees, churidars, or salwar kameez with a dupatta, ensuring modest attire.

A variety of poojas are performed in Kannada, including Abhishekam (6:00 AM – 7:30 AM, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM; Fridays 5:00 AM – 6:30 AM), Kumkum Archana (10:30 AM – 12:00 PM), Archana, Aarti, special sevas such as Homa and Utsava, and Saree Offering.

Daily free meals (Annadanam) are served to devotees from 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM, and Shesta Vastra is offered for special sevas.

Major festivals celebrated at Chamundeshwari Temple include Mysore Dasara (Navaratri) in September–October, Chamundeshwari Jayanti in June–July, Ugadi in March–April, and monthly Amavasya and Pournami observances.

Reaching the temple is convenient: from Mysuru city center, devotees can take a KSRTC bus (Route 201) to the hilltop, hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw (20–30 minutes), or climb 1,008 stone steps from the foothill (1–2 hours).

During Ashada Masam and Fridays, KSRTC runs special bus services due to restricted private vehicle access. The nearest railway stations are Chamarajapuram (3.63 km) and Mysuru Junction (13 km), while Mysore Airport is just 7.8 km away.

Paid parking is available near the temple, and battery-operated vehicles assist senior citizens and the disabled. Accommodation options include temple guest houses and choultries on the hill, with a range of hotels in Mysuru city.
