About

Batuk Bhairav Temple, also known locally as Batuk Bhairav Mandir, Adi Bhairav Temple, and Kamachha Bhairav Temple, is a revered ancient temple and pilgrimage centre situated in the Gurubagh, Bhelupur, Kamachha area of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, the temple also enshrines Batuk Bhairav, the child form of Bhairava, along with Adi Batuk Bhairav, Ashta Bhairava, and Unmatta Bhairava. This living heritage temple draws devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace in the heart of Varanasi.

The temple welcomes visitors from 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM and again from 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM. For a more peaceful experience, the best time to visit is early morning between 5 and 8 AM, especially during the winter months from November to February or on weekdays when the temple is less crowded.

The festival season, particularly during Batuk Bhairav Jayanti in November/December, Bhairav Ashtami, Navratri, Mahashivaratri, and every Amavasya (new moon), sees heightened spiritual activity and special rituals.

Devotees can participate in a range of poojas, including Daily Worship, Bhairav Havan/Yajna, 1008 Batuk Bhairav Stotra Recitations, Aapaduddharan Beej Mantra Jaap, and Rahu-Ketu Dosh Nivaran. The Sandhya Aarti, held from 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM, is a significant spiritual event.

Poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi, catering to a broad spectrum of pilgrims. Entry for darshan is free, making the temple accessible to all.

The temple observes a conservative dress code: men are recommended to wear kurta-pajama or jeans/trousers, while women are advised to opt for saree, salwar kameez, or other modest, covered clothing.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum, and visitors are required to keep cameras and mobile phones in secure bags or lockers. Reaching Batuk Bhairav Temple is convenient from major transport hubs.

From Varanasi Junction (BSB/Cantt), which is about 4.3 km away, or Banaras Railway Station (4.5 km), visitors can hire an auto-rickshaw or taxi to Bhelupur/Rathyatra.

Those coming from Assi Ghat or Lanka can take an auto or e-rickshaw to the Bhelupur police station area and ask for the temple in Kamachha locality. The temple is near Kashirag Apartment on Rathyatra Kamachha Road.

Parking is limited due to narrow lanes, so hiring an auto-rickshaw and walking is recommended. For accommodation, there are multiple budget and mid-range hotels in Bhelupur and Rathyatra, as well as guesthouses and homestays in Assi Ghat, Saket Nagar, and Lanka areas.

Nearby attractions include Shri Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, Durga Kund Temple, Assi Ghat, Kaal Bhairav Temple, and Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Devotees receive Kavach Prasad and a protection thread (Kala Dhaga), with special Annadanam for Gurukul students during Batuk Bhairav Jayanti.
