About

Balkampet Yellamma Temple, also known locally as Yellamma Pochamma Temple or Jala Durga, is a revered ancient temple and pilgrimage centre located in the Balkampet area of Hyderabad, Telangana.

Dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman), the temple also enshrines Lord Ganesha, Goddess Rajarajeshwari, Goddess Sri Pochamma, and Nagadevta.

The temple’s Dravidian architectural style and its status as a living heritage and state heritage site make it a significant spiritual destination for devotees and visitors in Hyderabad.

The temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM, allowing devotees ample time to seek blessings. For darshan, there are several options: free darshan, special darshan tickets priced at ₹50 and ₹100, and a VIP darshan facility.

Poojas such as Abhishekam (available at ₹50 and ₹500), Archana, and Pushparchana are performed in Telugu and Sanskrit, providing devotees with a traditional worship experience.

The temple is especially vibrant during festivals like Yellamma Kalyanotsavam (June–July, Ashada Masam) and Bonalu Jathra (July–August, Ashada Masam), when annadanam (free food) is organized for devotees.

Visitors are requested to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional attire like dhoti or kurta-pyjama, or formal trousers with a collared shirt, while women are expected to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or churidar with dupatta, ensuring modesty by covering shoulders and legs.

Reaching Balkampet Yellamma Temple is convenient via multiple modes of transport. The Hyderabad Metro Blue Line connects to Ameerpet or S.R. Nagar Metro Stations, both about 1.5–2 km from the temple, easily accessible by auto or a short walk. City buses operated by TGSRTC stop at S.R.

Nagar, Ameerpet, or Balkampet, with the Balkampet Bus Stop just 100 meters away. For those arriving by train, Nature Cure Hospital Railway Station (2.5 km), Begumpet Railway Station (3 km), Secunderabad Junction (6.5 km), and Hyderabad Deccan Station (Nampally, 8 km) are nearby.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad is about 31 km from the temple. Accommodation options such as Shabari Heights, Golden Premier Hotel, Aditya Park, and Hotel Greenpark are available within 0.5–3 km. Parking is extremely limited, but two-wheelers are easier to manage.

The temple provides ramps and basic accessibility support, including wheelchair-accessible restrooms. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the sanctum, though casual photos in the outer courtyard may be tolerated when not crowded.

Prasadam includes kumkum, turmeric, and sweets, adding to the spiritual experience. Nearby attractions include Hussain Sagar Lake & Tank Bund, Necklace Road, KBR National Park, and Birla Mandir, making Balkampet Yellamma Temple an ideal stop for pilgrims and tourists exploring Hyderabad.
