Baijnath Temple

This ancient temple, built by the Katyuri kings, is an ASI-protected monument and stands as a fine example of Nagara (North Indian) architecture.

The temple complex is recognized for its spiritual significance and its scenic riverbank setting, making it a sought-after destination for devotees and heritage enthusiasts alike. The primary deity enshrined at Baijnath Temple is Lord Shiva, worshipped here in his Vaidyanath aspect.

The sanctum is also home to other deities, including Goddess Parvati, Nritya Ganapati, Kartikeya, Narasimha, Brahma, Mahishasuramardini, Sapta Nartikas, Surya, Garuda, Kubera, Kedareswar, and Brahmani Devi.

This diversity of deities attracts pilgrims from across the region, especially during auspicious occasions. Darshan at Baijnath Temple is free for all visitors, with entry permitted from sunrise to sunset (daily timings: 6:00 AM to 8:00 or 9:00 PM).

The best time to visit is early morning between 5–8 AM, or during the winter (November to February), summer (March to May), and the festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri (February/March), Makar Sankranti (Uttarayani, January), and Shravan Mondays (July-August), when the temple sees a surge of devotees.

Daily worship rituals such as abhishek, aarti, and offerings of water, bilva leaves, and flowers are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi. Devotees may also perform personal rituals or sankalpa/puja with the assistance of local priests.

While there is no formal daily annadanam, simple prasad is distributed during major festivals and community events.

Visitors are requested to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional or modest casual attire (full-length trousers/jeans and shirts), while women are advised to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or conservative kurtis with covered legs and shoulders.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the main shrines and near the primary Shiva lingam and idols, but casual photography is allowed in the outer complex.

To reach Baijnath Temple, travelers can arrive by train at Kathgodam (145 km) or Haldwani (156 km) railway stations, or by air at Pantnagar Airport (180 km) or Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (300 km).

From these points, taxis or buses connect to Almora via Bhimtal or Haldwani, then onward to Kausani and Baijnath town. The temple is located near the Baijnath barrage, with designated open-air parking available; however, wheelchair accessibility is limited due to ancient stone steps.
