Ambika Mata Temple Jagat

Often referred to as the “Khajuraho of Mewar” or “Khajuraho of Rajasthan,” this temple is recognized for its Nagara (North Indian) architectural style and is an ASI-protected monument as well as a state heritage site.

Built by the Guhila dynasty during the reign of Rawal Allata around 961 CE, the temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre for devotees of Shakti and Amman.

The temple enshrines Goddess Ambika as the primary deity, with shrines and carvings dedicated to other deities such as Brahmani, Lakshmi, Durga, and Chamunda. Pilgrims can participate in daily aartis held in the morning, midday, and evening, conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

Entry for darshan is free, and simple prasadam such as mishri, dry fruits, or sweets is distributed after the aartis. There is no formal daily annadanam facility. Ambika Mata Temple Jagat is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with timings extending up to 8:30 or 9:00 PM on festival days.

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, or early in the morning between 5 and 8 AM for a serene darshan experience.

Major festivals celebrated here include Navratri (Chaitra and Sharad), Vijayadashami (Dussehra), and Diwali with Annakut, drawing devotees from across the region.

Visitors are advised to follow a conservative dress code: men should wear long trousers or traditional kurtas, avoiding shorts and sleeveless vests, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or long skirts/pants that cover shoulders and knees, avoiding revealing western attire.

Reaching the temple involves a scenic drive from Udaipur city, about 50 km away. Start from Udaipur, head southeast via MDR 11 or NH 27 toward Kurabad/Jagat, and continue along district roads through rural Mewar to Jagat village.

Private taxis or personal vehicles are recommended as public buses are limited. The temple is nestled inside a rock cleft, accessible with local guidance. The nearest railway stations are Udaipur City (50 km) and Ranapratapnagar (48 km), while Maharana Pratap Airport in Dabok is 45 km away.

Accommodation options in Jagat are basic, with only simple rest houses and refreshment stalls available. Most visitors stay in Udaipur, which offers a wide range of hotels and resorts. Nearby attractions include City Palace Udaipur, Saheliyon-ki-Bari, Jaisamand Lake, and Eklingji Temple.

Photography is permitted outdoors and of the temple’s exterior carvings, but strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum.
