Adichunchanagiri Kalabhairaveshwara Temple

Known locally as Mayuravana, Panchalinga Kshetra, and Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana Math, this ancient hill temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva.

The temple complex also enshrines Sri Kalabhairaveshwara, the Pancha Lingas (Gangadhareshwara, Chandramouleshwara, Malleshwara, Siddeshwara, Someshwara), Stambambike (Stambadamma), Marikamba Devi, Asthabhyravas, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Subrahmanya, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees of various deities.

The temple’s architecture is a blend of mixed and renovated styles, reflecting its status as a living heritage temple. Pilgrims can experience a serene spiritual atmosphere, with rituals and poojas conducted in both Sanskrit and Kannada.

Daily worship includes the early morning Abhisheka and special pujas, particularly on Saturdays. Kalashtami special worship is observed monthly on the eighth day after the full moon, drawing devotees seeking blessings from Kalabhairaveshwara.

Major festivals celebrated here include Kalabhairava Jayanti, Mahashivratri, Navratri, and Jatrotsava, making these periods especially vibrant for visitors.

Darshan at the temple is free, and the timings are accommodating for all schedules: open every day from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with alternative timings on Sundays and during festival days.

The best time to visit is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), evening aarti, weekdays for a less crowded experience, and the winter months from November to February.

A traditional dress code is observed, with men expected to wear dhoti, kurta, or formal attire, and women in sarees or salwar kameez. Reaching Adichunchanagiri Kalabhairaveshwara Temple is convenient.

From Bengaluru, pilgrims can take the Bengaluru-Mangalore Highway (NH 75) towards Hassan, turning left at Bellur Cross to reach the temple. KSRTC buses are available up to Bellur Cross, with local buses or autos covering the remaining 6 km.

Private vehicles can ascend the hill to a certain point, after which visitors must climb steps to the temple, a factor to consider for the elderly. Parking is available at the base and near the temple.

Accommodation is provided by Adichunchanagiri Mutt, with rooms for pilgrims and prasada (free food) served daily from the afternoon. Additional budget lodges and hotels are available near Bellur Cross and Bellur Village.

Photography is generally not allowed inside the main temple complex, preserving the sanctity of the site.
