Virupaksha Temple Pattadakal

Revered as an ancient and royal temple, this site is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva and is a significant pilgrimage centre.

The temple is also home to other deities such as Ganesha, Mahishasuramardini (Durga), Harihara, Narasimha, Bhairava, Lakulisha, and Nataraja, making it a spiritual hub for devotees seeking darshan and blessings.

Virupaksha Temple is part of the renowned Pattadakal Group of Monuments, which holds both ASI protected and UNESCO World Heritage status. The temple was built by Queen Lokamahadevi of the Early Western Chalukya dynasty, with the architectural expertise of Gunda Anivaritacharya.

Its intricate carvings and grand structure reflect the rich heritage and artistry of the Chalukyan era, attracting history enthusiasts and pilgrims alike.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with early morning hours between 5–8 AM and the winter months of November to February considered the best time to visit for a serene experience.

Devotees can participate in daily rituals such as Nitya Pooja, Archana, and Abhishekam, conducted in Kannada and Sanskrit.

Entry for darshan is free, and visitors are encouraged to follow the prescribed dress code: men should wear full-length trousers, jeans, or traditional dhotis with shirts or t-shirts, while women are advised to wear sarees, salwar kameez, churidar, or modest jeans/trousers with covered tops.

Major festivals celebrated at Virupaksha Temple include Maha Shivaratri in February-March and the Chalukya Utsava (Pattadakal Dance Festival) in January-February, drawing devotees and culture lovers from across the region.

Reaching the temple is convenient via Badami or Bagalkot, both accessible by train or road. From Badami Bus Stand or railway station, visitors can take an NWKRTC bus or hire an auto or taxi to Pattadakal, then walk from the bus stand to the temple complex.

The nearest railway stations are Badami (20 km) and Bagalkot (45 km), while Hubballi Airport (128 km) and Belagavi Airport (145 km) are the closest airports.
