About

Takhteshwar Mahadev Temple, also known locally as Takhteshwar Temple or the Marble Temple, stands as a revered hill temple and pilgrimage centre in Bhavnagar, Gujarat.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, with Nandi also venerated, this ancient temple is a prominent spiritual destination and a living heritage site, built in 1893 AD by Maharaja Takhtsinhji of the Gohil Rajput clan.

Its location atop Takhteshwar Hill in the Takhteshwar/Nanbhawadi area offers devotees a serene setting for darshan and pooja, with panoramic views of Bhavnagar city. The temple welcomes visitors daily from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), at evening aarti, or in the cooler winter months from November to February. Entry for darshan is free, making it accessible to all devotees.

Traditional or modest attire is expected: men should wear full-length trousers and shirts covering the shoulders, while women are advised to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or conservative kurtis that cover both shoulders and knees. Shorts and sleeveless clothing are discouraged inside the sanctum.

Poojas at Takhteshwar Mahadev Temple include Jalabhishek, offering bilva leaves, and special rituals like Rudrabhishek and Sankalpa/chanting sessions during the auspicious Shravan month.

These ceremonies are conducted in Gujarati, Sanskrit, and Hindi, allowing devotees from different backgrounds to participate.

The temple is especially vibrant during festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Shravan Maas (August-September), and Navratri (September-October), when community food distribution is also organized.

Reaching the temple is straightforward: arrive at Bhavnagar City Center (Kalanala or Panwadi areas), proceed to Takhteshwar Hill via Kalubha Road or Waghawadi Road, and drive up the paved access road to the parking area near the base courtyard.

From there, a climb up marble stairs leads to the main sanctum. Ample parking is available for two-wheelers and cars, though the final approach requires some climbing and is not fully wheelchair-accessible.

For those traveling by train, Bhavnagar Terminus Railway Station is just 5 km away, while Bhavnagar Airport is 9 km from the temple. Accommodation options nearby include Hotel Clarks Collection, Hotel Virgo Sumeru, Nilambag Palace Hotel, and Iscon The Fern Resort & Spa.

Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as Ganga Deri, Gandhi Smriti, Aksharwadi Swaminarayan Temple, Victoria Park, Gaurishankar Lake, Nishkalank Mahadev Temple, and Velavadar Blackbuck National Park.

Photography is permitted in the courtyard and exterior, but strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum. After aarti, devotees receive prasadam such as Sankhari prasad, vibhuti, or kumkum.
