About

Sri Gowthameswara Swami Temple in Rajahmundry stands as a revered pilgrimage centre on the banks of the sacred Godavari River.

Known locally as Gowthameswara Swamy Temple, Gowthameswara Swami Temple, and Jodugullu Shivalayam, this ancient temple is an architectural gem built in the traditional Dravidian style by the Eastern Chalukyan Dynasty.

It holds the distinction of being an ASI-protected monument, drawing devotees and heritage enthusiasts alike. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Sri Gowthameswara Swami.

The sanctum also enshrines Parvathi, Kumaraswamy, and Ganesha, making it a significant spiritual destination for families and devotees seeking blessings from multiple deities.

The temple’s riverbank location in Mangalavaripeta, near Gowthami Ghat and River Bund Road, adds to its serene and picturesque atmosphere, especially during early morning and evening hours. Darshan at Sri Gowthameswara Swami Temple is accessible to all through free entry.

The temple is open daily from 05:30 AM to 11:00 AM and again from 04:30 PM to 08:00 PM, with the best time to visit being during winter months (November to February), early mornings, or during the evening aarti.

Devotees are expected to follow a traditional dress code: men in dhoti, kurta, or formal wear, and women in sarees, churidar with dupatta, or traditional long dresses.

A variety of poojas are performed at the temple, including daily Abhishekam from 5:30 AM to 11:00 AM, Kavata Bandanam at 11:00 AM, and Kavata Udgatana at 04:30 PM.

Special Abhishekam is conducted on Fridays and Saturdays, while Ekadasa Rudrabhishekam (with oil) and Rudrabhishekam/Mahanyasa Purvaka are also observed. Poojas are performed in Telugu and Sanskrit, catering to the local devotee base.

The temple comes alive during major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Swamy Vari Kalyanam (March), Kartika Masam (October–November), Godavari Pushkaram (once every 12 years), Navaratri Utsavam (October), and Dasara (September–October).

Prasadam like Pulihora, Pongal, and Laddus is distributed, and Annadanam (free meals) is provided daily or on special festival days. Reaching the temple is convenient: it is about 3–5 km from both Rajahmundry Bus Complex and Railway Station, accessible by auto-rickshaw or taxi.

Rajahmundry Airport is approximately 15 km away. Parking is generally available along Godavari Bund Road, though it can be crowded during weekends and festivals.

Nearby attractions include Gowthami Ghat, Markandeya Swamy Temple, Pushkar Ghat Circle, ISKCON Rajahmundry, Rajahmundry bridge, and several other temples.

Accommodation options are plentiful near the city center and river ghats, with hotels such as Manjeera Sarovar Premiere, Hotel Jetty Grand, Akshay Residency, and AKANKSHA INN.

Photography is allowed in the outer complex and gardens, but cameras and electronic gadgets are usually prohibited inside the inner sanctum.
