About

Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple, located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in the Gir Somnath district of Gujarat, is a revered pilgrimage centre dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva.

Known by several local names such as Someshvara, Prabhas Kshetra, and Aadi Jyotirlinga, this ancient seaside temple holds immense spiritual significance for devotees across India.

The temple is also home to other deities including Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Kaal Bhairav, making it a prominent site for worship and religious ceremonies. The temple welcomes visitors daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, providing ample opportunity for darshan and participation in various poojas.

Pilgrims can opt for free darshan or choose VIP darshan for a fee of ₹500.

A wide range of poojas are conducted in Sanskrit, Gujarati, and Hindi, including Aavartan/Panchopchar Pooja, Rudra Abhishek, Maha Mrityunjay Jap, Bilva Pooja, Markandey Pooja, and Rajbhog Thal/Deepmala/Santan Gopal Mantra Pooja, with options for single or multiple performances.

The temple also observes major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Shravan Month (July-September), Kartik Purnima & Dev Diwali (October-December), and Sharad Navratri & Diwali (October-November), drawing large numbers of devotees during these auspicious times.

For those planning a visit, the best time to experience the temple’s serene atmosphere is during winter (November to February), in the mornings between 8 AM and 12 PM, or during the evening aarti. Weekdays tend to be less crowded, offering a more peaceful darshan.

The temple enforces a strict dress code: men are required to wear full-length trousers or traditional dhotis with shirts or kurtas, while women should dress in sarees, salwar kameez, or modest long ethnic suits, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Reaching Somnath Jyotirlinga Temple is convenient. Pilgrims can fly to Ahmedabad or Rajkot from major metros, then travel by train or road to Veraval or Somnath town. From there, local autos, taxis, or the temple trust shuttle can take you to Prabhas Patan.

The nearest railway stations are Somnath Railway Station (2 km), Veraval Junction (7 km), and Junagadh Junction (85 km). Airports nearby include Keshod (50 km), Diu (65 km), Porbandar (120 km), and Rajkot (200 km).

Accommodation options range from Shree Somnath Trust guest houses and private hotels in Prabhas Patan and Veraval to various dharamshalas within walking distance.

Pilgrims can also enjoy traditional sweets like Sukhdi and Churma Ladoo as prasadam, and free vegetarian meals are served daily at the Annakshetra. The temple offers designated parking, wheelchair access, ramps, elevators, and golf carts for accessibility.

Photography and electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside, but free lockers and baggage counters are available near the entrance.

Nearby attractions include Somnath Beach and the Light and Sound Show (0.5 km), Triveni Sangam (1.5 km), Bhalka Tirth (5 km), Gir National Park (43 km), and Diu Fort (65 km).
