About

Shikari Devi Temple, also known locally as Shikari Mata Temple and the Roofless Temple of the Goddess, is a revered hill temple dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman) in Himachal Pradesh.

Nestled within the scenic expanse of the Shikari Devi Wildlife Sanctuary in Mandi district, this ancient pilgrimage centre draws devotees and nature lovers alike to its unique setting atop a ridge.

The temple is renowned for its distinctive open-air sanctum, earning it the name "Roofless Temple of the Goddess," and offers panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

The temple’s origins are attributed to the Mahabharata era, with associations to the Pandavas and Sage Markandeya, though its exact historical period remains unknown or disputed.

Managed by a local panchayat or trust, Shikari Devi Temple stands as a testament to enduring faith and tradition in the region. Devotees can visit the temple at any time, as it is open 24 hours; however, practical access is best during daylight hours, from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

The best time to visit is in the early morning between 5 and 8 AM or later in the morning up to noon, especially during the pleasant summer months from March to May, the crisp winter period from November to February, or during the vibrant festival season.

Navratri, celebrated in April and again in September-October, is a particularly auspicious time, drawing pilgrims seeking the blessings of the Goddess. Darshan at Shikari Devi Temple is free for all visitors, with no entry fee.

Devotees are advised to adhere to a modest dress code: men should wear full-length trousers or kurta-pajamas, avoiding shorts and sleeveless shirts, while women are encouraged to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or other traditional or modest attire covering shoulders and legs.

Reaching the temple involves a journey through forested roads, culminating in basic unpaved parking at the base area or ridge near the final approach.

From there, visitors must ascend 300 to 550 steps to reach the sanctum, making the site inaccessible for wheelchairs or those with mobility challenges.

Photography is permitted for landscapes and exteriors, but visitors are requested to avoid intrusive flash or disrespectful behavior near the main idol, especially during rituals.

Shikari Devi Temple offers a spiritual retreat for those seeking darshan of Goddess Shakti amidst the tranquil beauty of Himachal Pradesh’s highlands.
