About

Panchvaktra Temple, also known locally as Panchvaktra Mahadev Temple, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated in the Kartarpur / Purani Mandi area of Mandi city, Himachal Pradesh.

This ancient temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre, beautifully positioned on the riverbank and atop a hill, offering devotees a serene and spiritually uplifting environment.

Recognized as an ASI protected monument, the temple is an excellent example of Nagara (North Indian) architectural style and is notable for its historical restoration by Raja Sidh Sen of Mandi in the late 17th century.

The temple is open to devotees every day from 5:30 AM to 8:30 PM, making it convenient for pilgrims to plan their darshan. Free darshan is available, allowing visitors to experience the divine presence of Lord Shiva without any entry fee.

Nandi, the sacred bull, also graces the temple premises, enhancing the spiritual ambiance for worshippers. Panchvaktra Temple is especially vibrant during the festivals of Maha Shivaratri, celebrated in February-March, and Sawan Mondays, observed in July-August.

During these times, the temple organizes community-sponsored free food (langar or bhandara), drawing large numbers of devotees and creating a festive atmosphere.

Throughout the year, prasadam such as misri, dry fruits, fruits, vibhuti, or charanamrit is distributed to visitors, adding to the temple's welcoming tradition. Daily rituals at the temple include Morning Aarti, Evening Aarti, and Rudrabhishek, conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

These poojas provide devotees with multiple opportunities to participate in spiritual activities and seek blessings.

The best time to visit Panchvaktra Temple is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), late mornings (8 AM–12 PM), and during the pleasant seasons of winter (November to February), summer (March to May), or the festival season, when the temple is adorned with decorations and filled with devotional fervor.

Visitors are advised to dress modestly, with men wearing long trousers and shirts or t-shirts, and women opting for sarees, salwar kameez, or kurtis with covered legs and shoulders.

There is no dedicated parking at the temple; visitors can use nearby Mandi town markets or roadside parking and walk to the temple. Due to its ancient structure and steps, the temple does not have a wheelchair accessible entrance.

Photography is permitted in the outer courtyard and temple surroundings, but is restricted or prohibited inside the inner sanctum or of the main deity.

Panchvaktra Temple in Mandi remains a cherished destination for devotees seeking spiritual solace and a glimpse of Himachal Pradesh’s rich temple heritage.
