Sajjangad (Samarth Ramdas Samadhi Temple)

This ancient temple, also known by local names such as Parali Fort, Paralgad, Navrous Tara, and Aswalyagad, is closely associated with the Maratha period and was originally built by the Bahamani Sultanate, later developed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

It stands as a living heritage temple managed by a local trust, drawing devotees and history enthusiasts alike. The primary deity worshipped here is Lord Rama, accompanied by Sita, Lakshmana, Lord Hanuman, and Goddess Anglai Devi.

The temple is also the Samadhi (final resting place) of the revered saint Samarth Ramdas Swami, making it a significant spiritual destination.

The temple complex is perched on a hill, requiring visitors to climb approximately 230–250 stone steps from the base parking area, a moderately strenuous ascent that is part of the pilgrimage experience.

Darshan at Sajjangad is free for all devotees, and the temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with the inner shrine closed between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM.

The best time to visit is early morning (5–8 AM), during winter (November to February), or in the monsoon months (June to September), when the surroundings are lush and pleasant.

A variety of poojas are performed at the temple, including Sahastra Tulsi Archana, Panchasukta Pavaman Recitation, Nandadeep Seva (monthly lamp service), Daily Abhishek & Pavaman, and Annadan Seva.

These rituals are conducted in Marathi and Sanskrit, allowing devotees to participate in traditional worship.

Major festivals celebrated here include Gudhi Padwa, Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti, Udvarchana, Shravan Maas/Maharudra Anushthan, Navaratrotstav & Dasara, and Tripurari Pournima, attracting large gatherings of pilgrims.

Devotees are expected to follow a modest dress code: men should wear full-length trousers, dhotis, or shirts (shorts and sleeveless clothing are discouraged), while women are advised to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or kurtis with covered legs, avoiding western or revealing outfits.

Reaching Sajjangad is convenient from Satara city, which is accessible via NH48 from Pune or Mumbai. From Satara Central Bus Stand or Rajwada, take Sajjangad Road or Thoseghar Road southwest for 16–18 km to the base parking area.

Satara Railway Station is about 20 km away, while Pune International Airport is 124 km and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is 270 km away. For accommodation, the temple trust manages an on-site Bhakta Niwas with dormitory and basic rooms, either free or very affordable.

Photography is permitted in open fort areas and courtyards but strictly prohibited inside the main Samadhi and prayer halls.
