Pratapgad Bhavani Temple

Situated in the lower fort area on the eastern side of Pratapgad Fort, this ancient pilgrimage centre lies in Mahabaleshwar Taluka, Satara district, Maharashtra.

The temple’s origins trace back to the Maratha period and it was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, making it a significant royal and heritage site. Recognized as both a state heritage monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the temple attracts devotees and history enthusiasts alike.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with early morning hours between 5–8 AM being especially recommended for darshan.

The best times to visit are during the winter months (November to February), the monsoon season (June to September), and during major festivals such as Navratri & Dussehra (September-October) and Shiv Jayanti (February), when the temple comes alive with special celebrations.

Devotees can participate in traditional poojas such as Naivedya (food offering) and Panchamrut Abhishek, conducted in Marathi and Sanskrit.

Entry for darshan is free, and visitors are requested to adhere to the dress code: men should wear traditional or modest attire like dhotis, kurtas, or trousers, while women are advised to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or conservative ethnic wear.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum but is permitted in the outer courtyards and fort premises. To reach Pratapgad Bhavani Temple, pilgrims can travel via State Highway 72 to Mahabaleshwar or Poladpur, then drive towards Kumbharoshi/Pratapgad phata and park at the fort’s base.

From there, a walk or trek of about 1–1.5 km up 300+ stone steps leads to the temple. The site is not wheelchair accessible.

The nearest railway stations are Wathar (60 km), Satara (81 km), and Pune Junction (142 km), while Pune International Airport (120 km) and Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (224 km) are the closest airports.
