About

Nestled in the heart of Kalpa village center in Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, the Narayan-Nagini Temple is a revered hill and village temple dedicated primarily to Lord Vishnu.

Also known locally as Shri Narayan Nagin Mata Temple, Narayan Temple, and Laxmi Narayan, this ancient temple stands as a living heritage site managed by the local panchayat and trust.

The temple is also home to the worship of Goddess Nagini and Chandika (Ma Durga), making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking blessings from multiple deities.

The Narayan-Nagini Temple welcomes visitors daily from approximately 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, though timings may vary seasonally. For the most serene darshan experience, early mornings between 5 and 8 AM or during the morning hours up to noon are considered ideal.

The temple is especially vibrant during winter (November to February) and summer (March to May), when the natural beauty of Kalpa enhances the spiritual ambiance. Darshan at the temple is free for all, and visitors are encouraged to dress modestly.

Men should wear long trousers or pants and shirts that cover the shoulders, while women are advised to opt for full-length trousers, salwar kameez, or long skirts with covered shoulders. Shorts and revealing attire are discouraged to maintain the sanctity of the temple environment.

The temple is renowned for its festive celebrations, particularly during Fulaich (Phulech) in September, the Raulane Festival in March, and the auspicious Navratri periods in September-October and March-April.

During these times, devotees can participate in community feasts (dham) and receive simple prasadam offerings such as fruits, grains, or sweets. Reaching the Narayan-Nagini Temple involves a scenic journey. Travelers can reach Shimla by flight, train, or bus from Delhi or Chandigarh.

From Shimla, Reckong Peo is accessible via NH 5, approximately 220 km away, by bus or taxi. The final stretch is a 9 km uphill drive or taxi ride to Kalpa, followed by a walk through the village pathways to the temple.

There is no dedicated parking, so vehicles must be parked along village roads, and the approach includes uneven trails and stone steps, making it unsuitable for wheelchair access.

For accommodation, visitors can choose from HPTDC Hotel The Kinner Kailash, Hotel Kalpa Retreat, and several local homestays within Kalpa village.

The area also offers several nearby attractions, including Reckong Peo, Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Gompa, Suicide Point, Kothi/Chandika Devi Temple, Roghi Village, and the scenic Sangla Valley & Raksham.

Photography is permitted in the temple’s exterior and courtyard, but strictly prohibited within the inner sanctum. Visitors are advised to follow local advisory signs or consult temple elders for guidance.

The Narayan-Nagini Temple in Kalpa offers a unique blend of spiritual heritage, natural beauty, and vibrant local culture, making it a must-visit for pilgrims and travelers in Himachal Pradesh.
