About

Kamakhya Devi Temple Kamru is a revered pilgrimage centre nestled within the historic Kamru Fort Complex in Kamru village, Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh.

Dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (also known as Amman), this ancient hill temple is also home to shrines of Badri Narayan and Lord Buddha, reflecting the region’s unique spiritual heritage.

Known locally as Kamru Kamakshi and Kamakhya Devi Temple inside Kamru Fort, the temple stands as a living heritage site, maintained by the state and local panchayat trust.

The temple’s location inside the Kamru Fort adds to its royal and ancient aura, making it a significant attraction for pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike. The structure features a distinctive architectural style, blending traditional stone and woodwork, characteristic of the region.

The temple is open daily from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM, offering devotees ample time for darshan and worship. Free darshan is available for all visitors.

Kamakhya Devi Temple Kamru is particularly vibrant during the Navratri festivals—both Sharad Navratri (September–October) and Chaitra Navratri (March–April)—when devotees gather in large numbers.

Local Kinnauri and harvest festivals, celebrated in the warmer months and autumn, also draw pilgrims and tourists to the temple. During these times, community feasts are organized, and simple traditional prasad such as dry fruits, misri, or local fruits is distributed to devotees.

Poojas at the temple are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi, maintaining the traditional rituals of the region. The recommended best time to visit is in the morning (8 AM–12 PM), during winter (November–February), or during the festival season for an immersive spiritual experience.

Visitors are required to adhere to a strict dress code: both men and women must wear modest, traditional or conservative clothing covering shoulders and knees. A Kinnauri cap and waist-band, provided at the entry, are mandatory for all devotees.

To reach Kamakhya Devi Temple Kamru, travelers should first arrive at Sangla town in Kinnaur district. From Sangla, it is a 2 km uphill journey to Kamru village, where designated paid parking is available near the base.

The temple is accessible via a walk through narrow, sloping village lanes, followed by a climb up traditional stone and wooden stairs inside the fort complex. Please note that the route is not wheelchair accessible.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the sanctum, but permitted in the outer courtyard and fort exterior, subject to caretaker instructions.

For accommodation, visitors can find local options in Sangla town, just 2 km from Kamru village, making it convenient for pilgrims planning an extended stay.
