About

Matri Mandir Morbi, also locally known as Mani Mandir, stands as a prominent royal and riverbank temple on the banks of the Machhu River in Morbi, Gujarat.

Revered for its devotion to Lord Vishnu as the primary deity, the temple also houses sanctums for Radha, Lakshmi Narayan, Lord Shiva, Parvati, Lord Ram, and Goddess Kali, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan of multiple deities in one sacred space.

Often referred to as the “Taj Mahal of Saurashtra” and “Taj Mahal of Gujarat,” Matri Mandir is celebrated for its unique mixed and renovated architecture, reflecting the grandeur of the British colonial era.

Built by Thakor Saheb Sir Waghji Rawal (Waghji Thakor), the temple is recognized as both a state heritage and a living heritage temple, drawing visitors interested in history and culture as well as spirituality.

The temple is also known by other names such as Mani Mandir Palace and Willingdon Secretariat. Matri Mandir Morbi welcomes visitors daily from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, or during the early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM, and especially during the evening aarti time, when the temple’s spiritual ambiance is at its peak.

Entry for darshan is free of charge, making it accessible to all devotees. Visitors are requested to follow a modest dress code: men should wear traditional or modest casual attire such as long trousers and shirts or t-shirts, while shorts and sleeveless clothing are discouraged.

Women are encouraged to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis with covered shoulders and legs. Reaching Matri Mandir is convenient from various parts of Morbi city.

Pilgrims can arrive via regional buses or trains, then proceed towards the Morbi-Navlakhi Highway (State Highway 24) and drive towards Jepur Village. The temple is easily accessible by hiring a local auto-rickshaw or taxi from the city center or railway station.

The nearest railway station is Morbi Railway Station (MVI), just 10 km away, with Wankaner Junction (27 km) and Rajkot Junction (57 km) also nearby.

For air travelers, Rajkot International Airport is 60 km away, while Jamnagar Airport and Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport are within 93 km and 185 km, respectively.

Ample street and open-space roadside parking is available, with basic ground-level access, though some areas may have limited wheelchair adaptability due to the historic architecture.

For accommodation, visitors can choose from several nearby hotels, including Sarovar Portico, The Fern Residency, Lemon Tree Hotel, and Regenta Inn Morbi.

Photography is permitted in the exterior and general premises from the outer courtyards, but commercial shoots and photography inside active prayer spaces during aartis may be restricted.

Nearby attractions such as Green Chowk & Nehru Gate, Wellingdon Secretariat, and Shree Khodiyar Maa Mandir (Matel) offer additional points of interest for those exploring Morbi.
