About

Markandeya Temple, also known locally as Rishi Markandeya Temple, Markandeya Ji Temple, or Maharishi Markandeshwar Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre nestled in the scenic hills of Jukhala, near Markand in Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh.

This ancient hill temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Rishi Markandeya, attracting devotees and spiritual seekers from across the region. Its tranquil location and spiritual ambience make it a significant village temple and a sought-after destination for those seeking blessings and peace.

The temple is accessible from Bilaspur town, which is about 20 km away. Pilgrims can reach Bilaspur or Kiratpur Sahib via NH154 or NH205 from Delhi or Chandigarh. From Bilaspur, local taxis and buses are available towards Jukhala or Ghumarwin, with a branch-off leading to Markandeya village.

For those traveling by train, the nearest railway stations are Anandpur Sahib (50 km) and Kiratpur Sahib (65 km). Air travelers can use Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti), located 90 km away, or Chandigarh International Airport (IXC), at a distance of 130 km.

Markandeya Temple welcomes visitors from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, offering free darshan to all devotees. The best time to visit is during the morning hours between 8 AM and 12 PM, in the winter months from November to February, or during the vibrant festival season.

The temple is especially lively during the Baisakhi Fair held in April, drawing large crowds and creating a festive atmosphere.

Devotees are requested to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional or modest casual attire such as full-length trousers, jeans, shirts, or kurtas, while shorts and sleeveless tops are discouraged.

Women are encouraged to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis with covered legs and shoulders. Parking is convenient, with free on-site parking and basic wheelchair accessibility at the entrance and parking lot.

Photography is allowed in the outer courtyards and scenic areas, but strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum near the primary deity. Accommodation options are primarily available in Bilaspur town, including hotels like Hotel Purnam Residency and Hotel Panchwati.

During the Baisakhi festival, basic guesthouses and temple-run sarai rooms are also available locally.

Nearby attractions include Gobind Sagar Lake (15 km), Vyas Cave (20 km), Baba Nahar Singh Temple (22 km), and the renowned Mata Naina Devi Temple (60 km), making Markandeya Temple an ideal stop for pilgrims exploring the spiritual heritage of Himachal Pradesh.
