About

Mahanandi Mahanandiswara Temple, also known locally as Mahanandi or Mahanandiswara Swamy Temple, is a revered ancient temple and pilgrimage centre nestled in Mahanandi Village, Mahanandi Mandal, Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, the temple also houses shrines for Kameswari Devi and Vinayaka Nandi, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings.

The temple stands as a living heritage site, with its origins attributed to early kings and later patronage from the Vijayanagara Emperor Krishnadevaraya and local rulers. Its architecture reflects a blend of styles, having undergone renovations over the centuries.

The temple complex is set amidst the tranquil Mahanandi forest area, offering a serene environment for worship and meditation. Mahanandi Mahanandiswara Temple is open daily from 5:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

The best times to visit are early mornings between 5 and 8 AM, during the evening aarti, in the winter months from November to February, and during major festival seasons.

Devotees are required to adhere to a traditional dress code: men should wear a dhoti, pants, or trousers with a shirt, while women are expected to wear a saree, churidar with dupatta, or salwar kameez.

For darshan, the temple offers several entry types, including free darshan and special darshan options with fees ranging from INR 50 to INR 100.

Various poojas are performed in Telugu, such as Astavidhamaha Mangala Harathi (5:30 AM – 6:30 AM), Ksheerabhishekam at multiple times throughout the day, Nandi Seva (6:00 AM – 6:00 PM), Ekantha Seva (9:00 PM – 9:30 PM), and others like Moolasthanam/Abhishekam Darshan and Suprabhatha Seva.

The temple celebrates important festivals including Maha Shivaratri and Mahanandi Brahmotsavam (February-March), Karthika Purnima (November), and Shravan Month Special Abhishekam (July-August).

During festivals, community annadanam is organized, and devotees can partake in prasadam such as laddu and other traditional offerings available at the temple stall. Reaching Mahanandi is convenient via Nandyal town, accessible by train or road from Hyderabad or Vijayawada.

From Nandyal, APSRTC buses, taxis, or auto-rickshaws lead to the temple, with the shortest route via Thimmapuram (17 km). The nearest railway stations are Gazulapalli (5 km) and Nandyal Junction (19 km), while Kurnool Airport (71 km) is the closest airport.

Accommodation options include Haritha Hotel (AP Tourism) opposite the temple, Devasthanam rooms, and other tourist lodgings nearby. The temple provides dedicated parking, and photography is restricted within the main premises, with lockers available for mobile phones.

Nearby attractions include the Nava Nandi shrines, Yaganti Uma Maheswara Temple, Belum Caves, and Ahobilam Narasimha Temple, making Mahanandi an ideal destination for spiritual seekers and pilgrims. For further information, devotees can contact the temple at +91-8514234726.
