About

Katasan Devi Temple, also locally known as Uttam Wala Bara Ban, is a revered hill temple dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman) and Lord Parshuram.

Nestled in Uttamwala Baraban near the scenic Markanda River, this ancient pilgrimage centre is located along the Nahan-Paonta Sahib NH-7 highway in Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh.

The temple’s tranquil setting amidst lush greenery and its proximity to the river make it a sought-after destination for devotees and spiritual seekers. The temple is recognized as a living heritage temple and is believed to have been built by the Raja of Sirmaur.

While its exact historical period remains unknown or disputed, the site continues to be an important spiritual hub for the region. The architecture style is unique and categorized as “Other,” distinguishing it from typical North Indian temple designs.

Katasan Devi Temple welcomes devotees daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the morning hours between 8 AM and 12 PM, during evening aarti, or in the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Chaitra Navratri (March–April), Shardiya Navratri (September–October), Bisu in spring, and Haryali during the monsoon. These occasions draw large gatherings of pilgrims who come to seek blessings and participate in special poojas conducted in Hindi.

Darshan at Katasan Devi Temple is free for all visitors, allowing devotees to experience the spiritual ambiance without any entry fee.

The dress code encourages modest, traditional, or casual clothing for men (trousers/jeans and shirts/kurtas; shorts are discouraged inside the sanctum) and conservative attire for women, such as salwar kameez, sarees, or full-length trousers with covered shoulders.

The temple is easily accessible by car or bus, with roadside parking available along the NH-7 highway. A short walk up minor steps leads to the shrine platform, making it convenient for pilgrims of all ages.

Photography is permitted in the outer courtyard and surrounding forest, but is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum near the deity. Commercial and video setups require prior permission from local management. Traditional offerings such as coconuts, sweets, and fruits are distributed as prasad.

While there is no formal daily annadanam, food may be distributed by volunteers during major festivals, adding to the sense of community and devotion that characterizes Katasan Devi Temple.
