Gopinath Temple Gopeshwar

Located on Gopinath Mandir Marg in the heart of Gopeshwar town, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, this hill temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre in North India.

The temple is renowned for its Nagara (North Indian) architectural style and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, adding to its cultural and historical importance. The temple serves as the winter seat for Rudranath, and Nandi is also worshipped here alongside Lord Shiva.

Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi, and darshan is free for all visitors. The temple observes a modest dress code: men are encouraged to wear traditional or modest Indian attire, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or kurtis with covered legs and shoulders.

Major festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Sharad Purnima (September-October), Dussehra/Navratri (October-November), and the Winter Doli Yatra or Rudranath Devasthanam Transition in November.

During these times, community bhandaras are organized, and simple prasad such as dry sweets, sugar candies, rudraksha beads, and fruits is offered.

Reaching Gopinath Temple is convenient via road from Delhi or Dehradun, following NH 334/7 to Haridwar and Rishikesh, then NH 7 through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karanprayag, and Nandprayag to Chamoli. From Chamoli, Gopeshwar is just 8–10 km uphill.

The temple is centrally located, accessible by local roads and a short walk from the main bazaar. The nearest railway stations are Yog Nagri Rishikesh (205 km) and Haridwar Junction (228 km), while Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is 225 km away.
