Chamunda Mata Temple Chotila

Perched atop Chotila Hill, just off the Ahmedabad-Rajkot National Highway, this ancient pilgrimage centre attracts devotees from across the region seeking darshan and blessings of Goddess Chamunda.

The temple also has a symbolic presence of Goddess Chandi and the lion, the goddess’s traditional vahana. The temple’s architecture follows the Nagara (North Indian) style and is managed by the Shree Chamunda Mataji Dungar Trust.

While the current structure is of modern origin, the site itself has been sacred since ancient times, making it a living heritage temple. Pilgrims can visit daily between 5:00 AM and 8:00 PM, with extended hours on Purnima and during Navratri when the temple remains open all night.

The best time to visit is early morning (5–8 AM), during the winter months from November to February, or in the vibrant festival season. Chamunda Mata Temple is renowned for its spiritual ambiance and regular rituals.

The day begins with Morning Aarti from 5:30 AM to 6:00 AM, and Evening Aarti takes place around sunset, before 7:30 PM. Special poojas such as the Navchandi Yagya and the Chaul Ceremony (child-naming or hair-tonsure) are also performed, with rituals conducted in Gujarati and Sanskrit.

Entry for darshan is free for all devotees. To reach the temple, visitors can travel from Ahmedabad via NH 47 through Limbdi and Sayla (170 km), or from Rajkot, which is just 60 km east on NH 47. Upon arrival, there is ample designated parking at the base of Chotila Hill for a nominal fee.

Pilgrims must climb 650–700 shaded steps, equipped with railings, to reach the temple; a doli or palanquin service is available for the elderly. The nearest railway stations are Than Junction (21 km), Rajkot Junction (47 km), and Surendranagar Junction (50 km).

Rajkot International Airport is 50 km away, while Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad is 170 km from Chotila.

Dress code is strictly traditional: men are expected to wear trousers, dhotis, or kurtas, avoiding shorts and sleeveless attire, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum and near the deity idol area.

Pilgrims can partake in simple sweet prasad from local vendors and enjoy community meals (annadanam) served between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM near the temple complex.

Trust-managed guest houses and dharamshalas, such as Shri Chandi Chamunda Atithi Gruh and Chamunda Dharamshala, along with several budget hotels in Chotila town, provide accommodation options for visitors.
