About

Champavati Temple, also known as Champavati Devi Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre situated in Chameshani Mohalla, within the Chowgan Mohalla area of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh.

This ancient hill temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman) as the primary deity, with Vasuki Naga and regional protector deities also worshipped within its sacred precincts.

Recognized for its Nagara (North Indian) architectural style, the temple stands as a significant ASI protected monument and is listed as a state heritage site, reflecting its royal legacy and cultural importance.

The temple is believed to have been built by Raja Sahil Varman, although the exact historical period remains unknown or disputed. Pilgrims and visitors can experience free darshan at Champavati Temple, with daily timings from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, aligning with sunrise to sunset hours.

The best time to visit is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), at evening aarti, in the summer months from March to May, or during the festival season for a more vibrant atmosphere.

The temple enforces a modest dress code: men are advised to wear trousers or full pants with a decent shirt or kurta, while shorts and sleeveless vests are discouraged inside the inner sanctum. Women should opt for salwar kameez, saree, or a modest kurta-pajama or jeans with a covered top.

Reaching Champavati Temple involves a journey to Pathankot, which is accessible by train or flight. From Pathankot, travelers can take an HRTC bus or private taxi for approximately 118 km (a 3.5–4.5 hour drive) to Chamba.

Upon arrival at the Chamba bus stand or Chowgan area, the temple is a short walk or local auto/cab ride away in Chameshani Mohalla. The nearest railway stations are Pathankot Junction (PTK) and Pathankot Cantt (PTKC) at 118 km, and Joginder Nagar Railway Station at 135 km.

For air travel, Pathankot Airport (IXP) is 120 km away, while Kangra Airport (Gaggal/DHM), Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ), and Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) are also viable options.

Visitors should note that there is no dedicated parking at the temple; municipal parking in Chamba town is recommended, followed by an uphill walk to the temple. The approach involves stone steps and uneven paths, which may be moderately challenging for wheelchair users.

Photography is strictly prohibited near the main idol and shrines, but exterior photography is generally allowed—visitors are advised to check local signage or consult caretakers.

Accommodation options, including hotels and guesthouses, are available in Chamba town near the temple, making it convenient for pilgrims and tourists alike to plan their stay.
