About

Tiruvottiyur Thyagarajaswamy Temple, also known locally as Vadivudai Amman Temple, Thiagarajar Temple, and Adhipureeswarar Temple, is a renowned pilgrimage centre and ancient temple located in Tiruvottiyur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Revered as the 3rd Shivastalam among the Chennai coastal temples, it stands as a significant Shakti Peetha and is celebrated for its Dravidian architecture and living heritage status.

The temple’s origins trace back to the Pallava period, with later expansions by the Chola and Vijayanagar dynasties, making it a site of deep historical and spiritual importance.

The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva, worshipped in the form of Thyagaraja, alongside a rich pantheon of other deities including Vadivudai Amman, Vattaparai Amman, Ganesha, Murugan, and the 27 Nakshatrams. This diversity of shrines attracts devotees seeking blessings for various aspects of life.

The temple is particularly vibrant during major festivals such as Brahmotsavam (February-March), Margazhi Utsavam and Arudra Darshanam (December-January), and Karthigai Deepam (November-December), when special rituals and celebrations draw large crowds.

For devotees planning a visit, the temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The best time to visit is during winter (November to February), early mornings between 5–8 AM, during evening aarti, or in the festival season, especially the annual brahmotsavam.

There is a dress code: men are expected to wear dhotis or formal pants, while women should wear sarees, churidars, or long skirts. Darshan is available free of charge. Reaching the Tiruvottiyur Thyagarajaswamy Temple is convenient due to its proximity to major transport hubs.

Pilgrims can take the Blue Line metro to Tiruvottiyur Theradi Metro Station, just 500 meters from the temple. Suburban trains from Chennai Central towards Gummidipoondi stop at Tiruvottiyur Railway Station, which is about 1 km away.

Buses from Broadway Bus Stand or Chennai Central serve the ‘Theradi’ or ‘Raja Kadai’ stops nearby. By car or taxi, the temple is 12–15 km north of Chennai Central Railway Station. For those traveling from afar, Chennai International Airport is approximately 25 km away.

Accommodation options range from small hotels, lodges, and guesthouses near Rajakadai and Tiruvottiyur to premium hotels in Chennai City, particularly around T. Nagar or Chennai Central.

Limited street parking is available, though it can be crowded, and the ancient stone structure may pose minor accessibility challenges. Photography and videography are generally prohibited inside the main temple premises.

Nearby attractions include Shri Pattinathar Temple (2 km), Arulmigu Marundeeswarar Temple in Thiruvanmiyur (25 km), Marina Beach (15 km), and the Mahabalipuram Shore Temple (65 km), offering pilgrims a chance to explore more of Chennai’s spiritual and cultural heritage. For more information, the temple’s official website and contact phone are available for queries.
