About

Mrikula Devi Temple, also known locally as Markula Devi Temple, Mrikula Mata Mandir, or Mirkula Devi Temple, is an ancient hill temple and renowned pilgrimage centre situated above the main bazaar in Udaipur, Lahaul and Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh.

Overlooking the scenic Chenab (Pattan) valley, this temple is recognized as an ASI-protected monument and is a significant spiritual destination for devotees of Goddess Shakti (Amman).

The temple is also associated with other deities such as Bhairava, Hanuman, Vishnu (Trivikrama), Buddha (Vajravarahi), and various Hindu deities from Shaktism, Shaivism, and Vaishnavism traditions.

The temple’s architecture is unique and stands out in the region, though it does not conform to a single classical style.

Its historical origins are attributed in folklore to Lord Vishwakarma and Bhima, while historians link its construction to regional hill kingdoms of the upper Chenab/Chandrabhaga valley. The exact historical period remains unknown or disputed.

Devotees can visit Mrikula Devi Temple for darshan during its daily timings: 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Entry for darshan is free, and the temple conducts a Morning Aarti, lasting approximately 20 minutes, at no cost. The aarti and other poojas are performed in Hindi.

After the aarti, simple prasadam such as dry sweets, fruits, or mishri is distributed to visitors. While there is no large-scale daily annadanam, community meals are organized during major festivals.

The temple is especially vibrant during Navratri (celebrated in September-October and March-April) and the Fagli Festival (February-March), drawing pilgrims from across the region.

The best time to visit is during the morning hours between 8 AM and 12 PM, and the temple is accessible throughout winter, summer, and monsoon seasons.

To reach Mrikula Devi Temple, travelers can arrive at Manali by road or air, proceed via the Atal Tunnel to Keylong, and continue by road to Udaipur town in Lahaul Valley. From the main bazaar in Udaipur, the temple is accessed by walking up local paths and stairs above the market area.

Parking is limited to roadside or open spaces near the bazaar, and the temple is not wheelchair accessible.

Visitors are expected to follow a modest dress code: men should wear full-length trousers or jeans with shirts or t-shirts covering the shoulders, while women should opt for traditional attire or conservative western wear with covered tops and full-length skirts or trousers.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the main wooden sanctum, but exterior photography is generally allowed—always check with the caretaker or priest before photographing rituals or worshippers.

Accommodation options in Udaipur are basic, with guesthouses and small hotels available; it is advisable to book in advance, especially during festival seasons.

Mrikula Devi Temple offers a serene and spiritually enriching experience for pilgrims and visitors exploring the sacred sites of Himachal Pradesh.
