Markanda Mahadev Temple (Markandadev)

This ancient temple, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is celebrated for its exquisite Nagara (North Indian) architectural style and is often referred to as the Mini Khajuraho or Khajuraho of Maharashtra due to its intricate stone carvings and historical significance.

The temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva, with sanctums and shrines also devoted to Sage Markandeya, Lord Ganesh, Nandi, Yamadharma, Mrityunjay, Umashankar, Dashavatar, Shakti Devi, Hanuman, Vishweshwar, Bhimeshwar, and Vireshwar.

The temple complex, built during the Chola period by the Rashtrakuta dynasty and later patronized in the Yadava period, is a testament to the region’s rich spiritual and architectural heritage. Darshan at Markanda Mahadev Temple is free for all devotees.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with special poojas including the early morning Kakad Aarti (5:30 AM – 6:00 AM), Abhishekam during morning hours, and Sandhya Aarti in the evening (6:30 PM – 7:00 PM).

Rituals and poojas are conducted in Sanskrit, Marathi, and Hindi, allowing devotees from various regions to participate comfortably. The best time to visit is during winter (November to February), the festival season, or early mornings between 5 and 8 AM.

Major festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Shravan Month Rituals (July-August), Kartik Purnima (November-December), and Makar Sankranti (January).

During these occasions, large-scale annadanam (free food distribution) is organized, and prasadam such as vibhuti, kumkum, and traditional sweets are offered to devotees.

Visitors should adhere to the temple’s dress code: men are expected to wear traditional or modest attire like dhotis, kurtas, or simple trousers and shirts, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Reaching the temple is convenient via road from Nagpur (about 184–190 km), Chandrapur (65–67 km), or Gadchiroli (40 km), with regular MSRTC buses and taxis available. The nearest railway stations are Mul (25 km), Chandrapur (65 km), and Wadsa, while the closest airport is Dr.

Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur (180 km). Basic retiring rooms and pilgrim sheds are available near the temple, with additional budget and mid-range accommodation options in Chamorshi, Gadchiroli, and Chandrapur.

Photography is not allowed inside the main sanctum, but visitors can capture the stunning outer architecture. Parking is available near the entrance, though it may be crowded during festivals, and wheelchair access is limited due to the ancient stone layout.
